We had blues high on our list of key colour trends for 2020 and with the announcement of Pantone’s colour of the year ‘Classic Blue’ we were very excited to start imagining all the ways we can use it. It’s a warm and reliable shade of blue which can add the perfect accent colour to your home.

Make a statement:

Go bold and cover all your walls in blue for an impactful and cocooning effect – we can really see this being a popular look for living rooms, bathrooms and rooms with less light; sometimes it’s best to embrace the dark side! We also see colour blocking being a key trend for 2020 and this colour will work perfectly for a stunning feature wall teamed with contrasting colours to add an element of fun.

Tiles

You can find an array of different tile materials, shapes and sizes to add this bold blue to your home. We love the idea of featuring some stunning Terrazzo wall and/or floor tiles with accents of blue incorporated amongst the speckles of colour.

The perfect accent colour:

For those who prefer not to douse their walls in colour, you can feature blue in your accessories or key furnishings. Pick a key furniture piece such as a deep blue velvet sofa and accessorise it with colourful or neutral cushions – depending on your style. Or you can use subtle accents of blue in artwork, fabrics and other decorative accessories. If you’re unsure on how to blend the blues into your already curated interiors try creating a colour wheel.

Combining colour:

A key colour trend we can see emerging in 2020 is the use of jewel-like colours; richly saturated colours to add warmth and an almost sultry feel. Classic Blue lends itself well to be teamed with these jewel-toned colours such as deep ruby reds and pinks, emerald greens and sapphire blues and will also work well with golds. If you prefer to balance your deeper shades with more neutral colours, we are predicting a shift from grey based neutrals to more yellow-based neutrals such as beige and oatmeal – you can lighten it with softer shades of blue and balance this out with neutrals.

[Example colours for deeper jewel tones to complement Classic Blue: Theatre Red by Little Greene, Hick’s Blue by Little Greene, Raspberry Sorbet by Zoffany, Crimson by Zoffany, Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball, Preference Red by Farrow & Ball]

Interior design trends for 2020:

Cobalt Blue

We have seen a lot of cobalt blue used across various design shows this year and can see pops of this energetic and vibrant colour making its way into interiors in 2020. Whether it’s a statement chair, feature wall or artwork – watch this space.

Jewel colours

Think emerald greens, ruby reds and sapphire blues – the jewels are making a statement in 2020 and will be adding to the more playful use of colour we’re predicting.

Terrazzo

It’s been around for a little while now but it’s not going anywhere and we see this increasingly being featured not just as wall and flooring options but in homeware also. Terrazzo provides almost limitless options of colour and is extremely hard-wearing and sustainable too!

Soft curves

Softer and more elegant curves to furniture such as scallop edging and this can be reflected in abstract artwork and decorative accessories such as sculptures.

Sustainable and natural materials

Sustainability is big and another one that’s not going anywhere soon. We predict an increase in handcrafted elements and the use of lighter woods across furnishings and floorings.

Bouclé

Bouclé is both a yarn and a fabric made from it. The yarn is made from a length of loops of similar size which can range from tiny circlets to large curls. We’ve seen this trend emerge in fashion with beautiful boucle coats this winter, and we predict it’s going to make a big impact in interiors. It’s a thick, warm and cosy material which will make for great cushions and throws.

Colour blocking

2020 is the year for playful colour! Yes, we will continue to see the use of feature walls but it’s all about colour blocking. We’re predicting more use of bold patterns, punchy and contrasting colours.

Emotive décor

In line with the sustainability trend, we predict interiors will further focus on wellbeing. Homes are a retreat from the outside world and whatever our style we will always want them to be our safe place. This ethos of wellbeing in the home will continue with more inviting interiors; it’s not just in the colours we use as these can be subjective but we’ll see it via more use of natural materials, plants and artwork such as positive quotes and curved shapes. After all, home really is where the heart is.
