Typically, the hallway is the first thing you see when entering a home. Not many homeowners think too long and hard about how to make the most of their hallway, though. You ideally want your hallway to more than a place to take your shoes off, but instead a beautiful extension of your house.

Hallway

There are many ways to make use of this space. You can add colour but also add quirky and cultural pieces that grab your eye as soon as you step through the door. The possibilities are endless.

Make use of colours

Your hallways may be small, short, thin, long, windowless… but it doesn’t matter. There is always a solution to whatever issues you think your hallway may have so that you can enjoy a lighter, brighter environment.

Colours can open out your hallways, making it seem bigger and airier, or if you want your hallway to become the centre of attention, you can use an outlandish colour. The choice is yours.

Put down a hallway runner

Changing the flooring can be a costly experience, but that doesn’t mean you need to settle or a plain and boring carpet or characterless wooden flooring. Rather, have a hallway runner that sets the scene of the rest of your home.

For a minimalistic décor, you can have a monochromic and simple hallway runner that’s effortlessly stylish. Or, if you’re more into maximalism, you can have a bright hallway runner that’ll ‘wow’ any guest as they arrive.

Organised chaos

It can be all too easy to lose sight of your clean and well-organised hallway. There are, however, many fantastic ways to keep your coats, shoes and even umbrellas stored and out of sight, out of mind.

For instance, double up a bench/blanket box from stores such as Luluna so that you can store your shoes but also use it as a seat. You can also include a suave console table and place fresh and colourful flowers in a vase on top.

Include a mirror (or two)

Mirrors are a great way to create the illusion of space. By placing a mirror in the right place, your small hallway can seem double the size. Make sure to play around with the placement, though, before settling.

Don’t forget the staircase

Usually, a staircase is included in a house’s hallway; do not overlook this fact. For those who have a staircase in view, you have many decorating options to choose from, such as painting the steps in an ombre fashion or painting each spindle of the staircase so that you have a statement piece.

Other ideas include:

  • Wallpapering your treads with bold, interesting patterns
  • Stripping them and keeping them bare and rustic
  • Having words on each step, spelling out a sentence like “Come on up”

Have a statement piece

By having a showstopping piece in the hallway, you are ensuring conversation from the get-go. This can be a piece of art on a neutral wall, a vase from another country or a souvenir from your travels.
