Love the idea of a spacious and light home? You are not alone, plenty of people like the thought of having a home that feels large and open. However, this isn’t something that we are all blessed with. Sure, there are people out there who have plenty of space in their home to play with, but there are also plenty of us who don’t.

Does this mean that we have to resign ourselves to giving up on our dream of a spacious home? Not at all. However, it does mean that we need to get smart and creative about how we make our home look spacious.

To help you to create the home that dreams of, we have put together some of the best ways that you can create the illusion of space in your home, no matter how small it may be.

Create the Illusion of Space in Your Home

Have plenty of glass

The glass is a great place to start if you want to create a spacious room. The great thing about glass, whether it be glass shower doors in your bathroom or even a glass coffee table or unit, is that it allows you to see everything in the room. There are no hidden corners, there is nowhere for light to get lost. By using glass you are going to not only allow for light to bounce around the space but also will give the impression that you have lots of space when you might not actually have much at all.

Mirrors, mirrors, everywhere

Following on from the glass theme, another great use for glass is in mirrors. Mirrors will reflect any light around a room, which instantly makes them feel bigger. Also, when they are placed on a wall, they will create an optical illusion that the room is actually bigger than it is, especially if it is opposite a window.

Pick furniture that is raised

One way that you might not realise that you are cluttering up your room is with the furniture that you choose. In homes that are small, it is best to avoid picking heavy or solid furniture pieces as these can cramp everything up together. Not only this, but it is better if you can opt for raised furniture rather than furniture that sits directly on the floor as you will still be able to see some of the floors underneath the furniture, again giving the illusion of more floor space.

Create one stream of flooring

Stop-start flooring or a change between wooden and carpets is going to split up your home and make it seem smaller. It is a much better approach to create a streamlined effect with your floor and has the same wood running through with very subtle joins between rooms. This will not only be great for moving the light around the room but will also help to create a feeling that the room you are in is even bigger.

Keep your additional lighting low

Of course, you cannot bring your lightbulbs down from your ceiling, but if you want to add extra lighting to your room, such as lamps, then you are going to want to place them as low as you possibly can. Eye-level is best as this will ensure that any shadows are minimised, which will be great for opening up your space and really making the most of the light that you have. Try just one wider curtain

Curtains are great when it comes to adding colour, texture and of course privacy to your home, but they can be a bit on the oppressive side if you have a small space. This doesn’t mean that you have to go without curtains (although you may find that blinds are a better option) but it does mean that you may need to consider raising your curtains up off, or buying one wider curtain rather than two, as this will make space appear bigger when they are drawn.

Want to really create an open and inviting home that is just ready and waiting for guests to visit? Hopefully, these tips have helped you to figure out the best ways to do this. One other great choice is to take a look at some of the stylish frameless balustrades made with glass that are available online and in stores. There are a variety of styles to choose from and no matter which one you pick, you are going to have a home that you can be proud of.
