Here are our 4 tips to help you grow the tastiest vegetables.

1. Pick the right vegetables

Salad leaves are the easiest edible crop to grow. Ready to harvest in just three weeks, they will continue to grow so you can enjoy their fantastic crunchy fresh leaves. Courgettes are also a good idea, easy to look after and you can never have too many. But, our favourite is garlic; firstly, because it’s delicious and adds flavour to every dish and secondly because they’re quite easy to grow.

2. Find the best vegetable patch

Before you start anything, go out in your garden and work out the best place for your veg patch. Look for a sunny, yet sheltered place.
Keep in mind that many plants such as cucumbers, tomatoes or strawberries need shelter from the wind. It could be a good idea to invest in a greenhouse or a polytunnel to keep them safe. This would also help you to control the temperature, humidity and ventilation of their environment.

3. Get the right kit

To look after your vegetables correctly, you need to have the right tools. From seeding to planting to feeding and pruning; there is a lot to think about. Invest in a few tools to start with, we would advise a hand trowel and fork as well as a good pair of gloves and secateurs. Don’t forget your watering can too!

4. Prepare accordingly

Before planting anything, check the condition of your soil. If your soil is thin with stones or if it naturally attracts water, you may want to build raised beds. To get the most out of your plants, it’s always important to prepare the soil before planting, that’s why we advise adding organic matter such as manure. Indeed, manure has been known for centuries to add nutrients to the soil and therefore aids the development of healthy plants and vegetables.

Growing your own vegetables can be fun and rewarding, all you need is a bit of practice and a lot of passion. However, it’s always important to follow the rules behind the science of gardening for a healthy harvest.
